While the museum tells the rich story of maritime history of San Diego and beyond, it also offers exciting events for the San Diego community to enjoy. For example, right now, the museum is offering an exciting chance to climb aboard the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship!
The Star of India began her adventures in the Isle of Man back in 1863. While most ships at the time were still being built from wood, the Star of India was reaching for new horizons and was built from iron instead. At the time, she was named Euterpe, after the Greek muse of poetry and music. While her first voyages to India were nearly disastrous – she suffered a collision and was caught in a cyclone and barely made it back to port. She eventually was purchased by a crew line in London where she carried English, Irish and Scottish immigrants to New Zealand and other stops along the way such as Austrailia, California and even Chile. This impressive ship sailed twenty one times around the world and today still sails in the ocean by a volunteer crew though she no longer goes on long voyages.
When you visit the Maritime Museum of San Diego, you can actually climb aboard this ship that is nearly 200 years old! The Star of India is just one of the many historic vessels that you can climb aboard and explore. Walk along the deck of the ship and even go under to the quarters and imagine what it was like like to travel across the ocean on the ship! The museum also offers exciting events throughout the year.
